Pickering
Town
One of
the features of the wartime weekend at Pickering is the Vehicle parade. It is
possible that the 2006 parade may be the last because of marshalling and
organisational problems closing the towns traffic, and this years parade was a
shorter than usual route. In addition to the vehicles, there were also parades
from veterans and re-enactors. These all took place on Saturday morning.
The
parades started with bands, veterans and re-enactors. Thousands of
people lined the streets to watch.

Civilian
vehicles followed the marching men, many of which were parked on the
main street after the parade. The military vehicles followed with
General Montgomery at the head of the convoy.

Entertainment
in the town started at noon. The high street was closed during Saturday and
became a pedestrian area. The crowds were entertained by Paul Harper's ENSA Show
amongst other entertainers, plus 'Monty' was about inspecting the troops.

The
narrow streets were a challenge for some of the larger vehicles,
especially considering the numbers of people crowding the pavements
and spilling onto the road.

After
the parade was complete, the vehicles dispersed around the town and station and
could be found scattered on any open space. Troops could be found everywhere,
and from many different services and countries including some Russians seen
below.
